Experiences at Ngon Lok

LL

Lam Lai-Fong

Daughter of resident, Wan Chai

My mother has been on the Residence and Lifestyle Plan for seven months now. What surprised me most was how quickly she found her rhythm there. She had been quite withdrawn since moving out of our old family flat, but within a few weeks she was talking about the people in her mahjong group as though she had known them for years.

Chan Wing-Ho

Cultural Studio member, Kowloon City

I come from Kowloon twice a week for the Cultural Studio. The calligraphy sessions are led at a pace I can actually keep up with, which has not been my experience elsewhere. The opera afternoons are the highlight for me β€” there are a few of us who really know the repertoire and the conversation after is as enjoyable as the listening.

Yip Ming-Yee

Companion Circles member, Stanley

I was sceptical at first β€” at my age you become cautious about new arrangements. But the Companion Circles have been exactly what they described. We meet for tea on Monday and Wednesday mornings, play a few rounds of cards, and talk. Nothing more than that. But it has made a real difference to the week.

Lo Ka-Man

Son of resident, Central

The practical side has been handled better than I expected. Fees are what they said they would be, and when I call with a question I reach a person who knows who my father is. There is no being passed around. I realise that sounds like a low bar, but it has not been my experience with other places we considered.

Tang Hoi-Ling

Resident, Residence Plan

The room is comfortable and well kept. I brought a few of my own things to make it feel more familiar and that was no problem at all. I eat better here than I have in years because I no longer have to think about it. The view from the veranda in the morning is worth the trip to Stanley on its own.

Wong Cheuk-Yiu

Daughter of member, Sai Kung

My mother joined the Cultural Studio after my father passed. She had been keeping to herself a lot, and we were worried. Ka-Wing, who runs the studio, was particularly patient with her in the first few weeks. She did not push, but she made sure my mother always had somewhere to sit and someone to talk to. It helped more than I can say.

How Residents Settled In

A few longer accounts from families who were kind enough to share more detail about what brought them to Ngon Lok and how things have gone since.

The Situation

Mr Kwok, 78, had been living alone in Tuen Mun after his wife passed. His children lived in different parts of Hong Kong and felt he needed more regular company than they could provide, but he was firm that he did not want to live with any of them. He was in good health but increasingly quiet.

What Happened

His eldest daughter arranged a visit to Ngon Lok. Mr Kwok was quiet during the tour but agreed to try the Companion Circles for one month. Three months later, his family moved him onto the Residence Plan. He had asked to stay.

After Eight Months

Mr Kwok now leads the Wednesday card table and has become something of an informal host to newer members of the Companion Circle. His family visits on weekends and joins him for Sunday lunch, which he has requested be kept as a standing arrangement.

"He calls us more than he used to. He has things to report."

The Situation

Mrs Cheung, 72, had retired from decades of work as a seamstress in Mong Kok. She lived with her son but found the arrangement difficult β€” not because of any conflict, but because she felt she had no life of her own and was simply being looked after. She wanted to be useful and engaged, not cared for.

What Happened

Mrs Cheung joined the Cultural Studio on her own initiative after reading about it. She began with the craft sessions β€” her needlework background made her a natural teacher β€” and within a term she had taken on a small craft demonstration role for newer members.

After One Year

She still lives with her son but comes to the studio three times a week. She has started a small embroidery group that now runs independently alongside the main programme. Her son says she has been noticeably happier since she started.

"She is teaching again. That is what she needed."
